Fermentation Device Comparison (aka “Smackdown”)

With the increased popularity in home fermentation, there is a slew of new gadgets available to assist in small-batch fermenting (for our purposes, “small-batch” means amounts a half-gallon or smaller).

We put six of them to the test, and compared them with the low tech “old school” method.

All the devices in this review are designed to fit a wide mouth mason jar.

Watch the four-part series to see how each fared and who came out on top!

I have so many regular Mason jars. Not wide mouth. They were my grandmother’s. Is there anything that fits those but pickle pipes?

It seems most of these are designed for wide mouth. I have seen a few smaller “pebbles” like those from Masontops. In the case of regular mouth, you could just use an “old school” or homespun tech like a small olive jar with a cloth or paper towel around it. Or if you’re making cucumber pickles, simply stuff as many as you can under the shoulders of the jar so they don’t pop up!
