Susie Sourdough is currently in Waterloo, Illinois

Susie Sourdough is a project which launched January 1. The goal of the project is to build and foster (literally) community through a shared sourdough starter.

Each week, Susie is sent to a new home, in a different state, where it is fed and resides for 7 days. There, it collects microbes from the local sourdough terroir– the flour, water, and air unique to that area. And, if the foster family already has an active sourdough starter, then some of it is added to Susie, too!

After a week, it is divided, and then sent to the next destination.

Susie is a 1-year old sourdough starter which was born on December 29, 2019 in San Diego, California.

Why “Susie”?

Susie is the name of my late mother, who passed away late last year. She often referred to me as “my son the fermentah” in her Brooklyn accent.
